YouTube Restricted Mode is a content filtering feature that hides videos flagged as potentially mature or inappropriate. While useful for families and schools, it can also block legitimate educational and informational content. Turning off Restricted Mode on YouTube varies by device and can sometimes be blocked by network administrators, parental controls, or Google account settings. This guide covers how to disable it on every platform.
Restricted Mode works on a per-browser, per-device basis. Disabling it on your desktop does not automatically turn it off on your phone or Smart TV. You need to adjust the setting separately on each device. Additionally, if Restricted Mode was enabled by a network administrator (such as at a school or workplace), you cannot disable it on that network — the restriction is applied at the router or firewall level.
If you find that the Restricted Mode toggle is greyed out and you cannot change it, the restriction is likely enforced by a Google Workspace administrator, a parental control app, or your network settings. We cover solutions for each of these scenarios below.
On desktop: click your profile icon in the top-right of YouTube > scroll down and click Restricted Mode: On > toggle Activate Restricted Mode to off. On mobile: tap your profile icon > Settings > General > Restricted Mode > toggle it off.
Method 1: Disable Restricted Mode on Desktop (Chrome, Firefox, Edge)
The desktop browser setting is stored per browser and per profile. If you use multiple browsers, you need to turn it off in each one.
Open YouTube and Sign In
Go to youtube.com in your browser. Sign in to your Google account by clicking the Sign in button if you are not already logged in. Restricted Mode settings are tied to your Google account when signed in, or to the browser profile when signed out.
Access Restricted Mode Setting
Click your profile picture (or the three-dot menu if signed out) in the top-right corner of the YouTube page. Scroll to the bottom of the dropdown menu. You will see Restricted Mode: On (or Off). Click on it to expand the setting.
Toggle Restricted Mode Off
Click the toggle switch next to Activate Restricted Mode to turn it off. The toggle should change from blue (on) to grey (off). The page will automatically reload with unrestricted content. If the toggle is greyed out and cannot be clicked, see Method 4 for troubleshooting locked settings.
Clear Browser Cache (If Changes Do Not Apply)
If Restricted Mode appears to stay on after toggling it off, clear your browser cache. In Chrome, press Ctrl + Shift + Delete, select Cached images and files and Cookies, then click Clear data. Close and reopen the browser, then check the setting again.
Tip: If you use multiple Google accounts, Restricted Mode settings are separate for each account. Switch between accounts by clicking your profile picture and selecting a different account, then check the Restricted Mode setting for each one.
Method 2: Turn Off Restricted Mode on iPhone and iPad
On iOS devices, Restricted Mode can be controlled through the YouTube app or through Screen Time parental controls.
Open the YouTube App
Launch the YouTube app on your iPhone or iPad. Tap your profile picture in the top-right corner. Scroll down and tap Settings.
Find the Restricted Mode Toggle
In Settings, tap General. Look for the Restricted Mode option. If it is toggled on (blue), tap it to turn it off (grey). The change takes effect immediately — return to the YouTube feed and previously hidden content should now appear.
Check iOS Screen Time Restrictions
If the toggle in the YouTube app is greyed out, it may be locked by iOS Screen Time. Go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Content Restrictions > Web Content. If set to Limit Adult Websites, this can force YouTube into Restricted Mode. Change it to Unrestricted if appropriate. You will need the Screen Time passcode to make changes.
Method 3: Disable Restricted Mode on Android
Android devices control Restricted Mode through the YouTube app settings. Family Link parental controls can also enforce it.
Open YouTube Settings
Open the YouTube app. Tap your profile picture in the top-right corner. Tap Settings from the menu. Tap General.
Toggle Off Restricted Mode
Find Restricted Mode in the General settings list. If the toggle is blue (on), tap it to turn it off. The setting applies immediately to your current account on this device.
Check Google Family Link
If the setting is locked, it may be controlled by Google Family Link (parental controls). The parent or family manager needs to open the Family Link app, select the child's account, go to Controls > Google > YouTube, and disable Restricted Mode from there. The child cannot change this setting themselves.
Method 4: Fix Greyed-Out Restricted Mode Toggle
When the Restricted Mode toggle is greyed out, it has been locked by an administrator, parental control, or network restriction. Here are the common causes and fixes.
Check for Network-Level Restrictions
Schools, libraries, and workplaces often enforce Restricted Mode through their network settings (DNS filtering or firewall rules). You cannot bypass this on their network. If you switch to a different network (like your mobile data instead of Wi-Fi), Restricted Mode should become toggleable again. This confirms the restriction is network-level, not account-level.
Check Google Workspace Admin Settings
If you use a Google Workspace account (school or work email), your administrator can lock Restricted Mode. You will see a message saying "This setting is managed by your organization" or similar. Contact your IT administrator to request the restriction be changed. You cannot override this yourself on a managed account.
Sign Out and Use a Personal Account
If the restriction is tied to a managed account, sign out of that account on YouTube and sign in with a personal Google account. On personal accounts, you have full control over Restricted Mode. You can also use YouTube in an incognito or private browsing window to bypass account-level restrictions.
Check Router-Level Settings
Some routers (especially those provided by ISPs) have built-in parental controls that enforce YouTube Restricted Mode through DNS settings. Log into your router's admin panel (usually 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1), look for Parental Controls or Content Filtering settings, and disable any YouTube restrictions. You may also need to change your DNS servers from the ISP's filtered DNS to a standard DNS like Google (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1).
Warning: If Restricted Mode is enabled on a child's account through Family Link or Screen Time, disabling it gives them access to all YouTube content, including videos that may not be appropriate for their age. Consider using YouTube Kids as an alternative for younger children rather than disabling Restricted Mode entirely.
Why Does This Problem Happen?
Restricted Mode gets enabled or locked for several reasons:
- Accidental activation: Users sometimes toggle Restricted Mode on while exploring YouTube settings without realizing what it does. It remains active until manually turned off.
- Network enforcement: Organizations enforce Restricted Mode by blocking access to the toggle through DNS records (restrict.youtube.com) or firewall rules. This is common in schools and libraries.
- Parental controls: Family Link on Android and Screen Time on iOS can lock Restricted Mode so children cannot disable it. Parents sometimes forget they enabled this setting.
- Google Workspace policies: Administrators of Google Workspace domains can enforce Restricted Mode for all users in the organization through the admin console.
- Browser extensions: Some browser extensions or security software enable Restricted Mode as part of their content filtering. Check your installed extensions if the setting keeps re-enabling itself.
Frequently Asked Questions
Restricted Mode uses automated signals (video titles, descriptions, metadata, age restrictions, and community guidelines flags) to filter out potentially mature content. This includes videos discussing drug use, sexual themes, violence, and other mature topics. It also hides most comments on videos. The filter is not perfect — it sometimes blocks innocent content while missing genuinely inappropriate material.
This usually indicates a browser extension, security software, or network policy is re-enabling it. Try disabling all browser extensions and checking again. If it only happens on a specific network, the network is enforcing it. Also check if you have multiple Google accounts — Restricted Mode might be off on one account but on for another.
In most cases, no. School-managed Chromebooks have Restricted Mode enforced through Google Workspace admin policies. The setting is locked at the organizational level and cannot be changed by individual users. If you believe the restriction is too aggressive, contact your school's IT department.
A VPN can bypass network-level Restricted Mode restrictions because it routes your traffic outside the restricted network. However, it cannot bypass account-level restrictions set by Google Workspace administrators or parental controls. VPN use may also violate your organization's acceptable use policy.
Open the YouTube app on your Smart TV. Navigate to Settings (gear icon, usually in the left sidebar). Find Restricted Mode and toggle it off. On some TV models, you may need to sign in to your Google account first. If the option is not visible, update the YouTube app to the latest version from your TV's app store.
No. Restricted Mode is a filter on the regular YouTube platform that hides some mature content. YouTube Kids is a completely separate app with a curated library of child-appropriate content, parental controls, timers, and no comments. YouTube Kids provides much stronger content filtering than Restricted Mode.
Individual users cannot whitelist channels in Restricted Mode. However, Google Workspace administrators can approve specific channels and videos that will be visible even when Restricted Mode is on. This is done through the Admin console under Apps > YouTube > Content settings.
YouTube hides comments in Restricted Mode because comment sections frequently contain mature language, links to inappropriate content, and other material that the filtering system cannot reliably moderate in real time. Disabling Restricted Mode restores comment visibility on all videos.
Yes. Restricted Mode can affect YouTube Music by hiding songs and music videos flagged as explicit or mature. If you notice missing content in YouTube Music, check the Restricted Mode setting in both the YouTube Music app and the regular YouTube app, as the settings can be linked.
The process is the same as other desktop browsers. Go to youtube.com in Safari, click your profile icon in the top-right, scroll to the bottom of the menu, click Restricted Mode, and toggle it off. If using Safari on an iPhone, open YouTube in the Safari browser (not the app) and follow the same steps. Note that the YouTube app and Safari have separate Restricted Mode settings.
